Jo Ann Hattner planned and moderated a major session on the gut microbiome and its influence on human health with experts Glenn Gibson, PhD, Erica Sonnenburg, PhD, and Justin Sonnenburg, PhD.

Part 1: The Gut Microbiome, Its Influence on Human Health
Erica Sonnenburg, PhD and Justin Sonnenburg, PhD

Research on the inhabitants of the human gut, known collectively as the gut microbiome, has exploded in recent years with investigators exploring how these microorganisms affect our overall health and physiology. This presentation by two research microbiologists will include what is known about how our gut flora contributes to immunity, body weight, mood, and long term health. They will discuss what makes up the good gut, as well as what the signs of a healthy gut are. Is a healthy gut solely the absence of illness or are there other considerations? Finally the researchers will share their recommendations for nourishing the gut microbes throughout the life cycle.

Part 2: Prebiotics and Probiotics: The Guardians of Gut Health
Glenn Gibson, PhD

In 1995, the concepts of prebiotics and synbiotics were introduced by Glenn Gibson and Marcel Roberfroid of the Université Catholique de Louvain — both researchers who reported on the dietary modulation of human colonic microflora. Today we have a plethora of research documenting the effects of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics. Gibson has been at the forefront of this research. This session will delve into some of the recent research, explaining how it is conducted in human subjects and exploring how prebiotics are the gut’s guardians. In addition, the scope and appropriate use of the term prebiotic will be discussed, as well as the potential of dietary ingredients and the identification of foods that can be fortified.
